Soup Kitchen Update for June 2015

We moved to our temporary location a few weeks ago. The people are now eating inside the building instead of under a tent. Winds have been a bit strong and this was a safety move. We hope the addition for our new kitchen will be completed this summer at Jambi/Unorcac – our original location.

Cotacachi soup kitchenWednesday, June 10 was a special day.

Several groups of women have been making scarves and hats for these poor elderly people. These were distributed, along with some used clothes. First we served breakfast to 32 people and then distributed the donations.

Medical Treatment

Over the last few weeks, local acupuncture Doctor Santiago Cedeno and his wife, Alexandra, have treated some of our elderly with medical problems. They recently relocated from Quito and now reside in Cotacachi. They have been in practice for 16 years.

Many of our elderly have spinal and lower back problems and there definitely is improvement and less pain. They receive treatment and natural medicines and vitamins. Poor nutrition is a main issue. Most of them live under deplorable housing conditions. Running hot water and electric is a rarity for them.

The elderly street lady (in the photo) on the table for treatment lives in the woods and bathes in the river. We felt so privileged that she agreed to have treatment for her ailments. She is mute – so we use sign language.Cotacachi soup kitchen

I highly recommend Dr. Cedeno and his wife if you are in need of treatments. These are some of the services offered.

  • acupuncture
  • naturopathic blood and urine test
  • chiropractic
  • bioscanner
  • ionic detox
  • qigong and KungFu
  • therapeutic massage

Can You Volunteer?

We are always in need of volunteers to help serve and prepare a simple breakfast. Also, if you are coming from the States we need vitamins, yarn and used clothing for the non Indigenous. We are working on getting some clothing for the Indigenous.

Working with these people and serving them a meal is very rewarding. They are much happier and now communicate with each other at breakfast time. Some of the women are crocheting and we hope that they will be able to sell what they make at a bazaar to earn some money.

Many of you have been generous in helping to keep our soup kitchen going with funds to purchase food for our breakfast meal. Your support is deeply appreciated, as we aim for the addition of a kitchen at Jambi/Unorcac to better serve our poor elderly – the forgotten people.

Please remember, all donations go to the project. There are no administration fees.

As always
