First of all I want to thank all the friends of Ecuador Project Hope that continue with donations and personal assistance with projects.
We are on a new journey as of this week and will open a Soup Kitchen to feed the elderly at the South end of town. In the past you have supported Pan de Cielo kitchen at the North end of town. At this time they are self sufficient.
Our location is in the Unorcac/JambiMascari building at the lower end of 10 de Agosto, our main street in Cotacachi. The Unorcac organization exists for preserving the indigenous culture, assisting indigenous women, and serving the 45 indigenous communities with educational programs, events, courses etc. and preserving the cultural heritage of the people.
It is not government funded, nor church sponsored. It exists by donations from the communities locally, and by the restaurant that serves lunch. They have been in existence for 15 years.
We asked the indigenous women to help us with a name for the kitchen. Hatuku Mikui is the name for our new kitchen. In translation it basically means food for our elderly. We will open on Wednesday the 10th and Thursday the 11th of September. Breakfast will be served starting at 8:00am with our wonderful volunteers. The goal is to be open 5 days a week and eventually serve lunch.
This will be a project that unites all local people – Expats, Spanish, Indigenous – under a common cause that reduces the divisions of race and ethnicity, and accentuates the love and care that unite us all.
This is a grass roots adventure and the kitchen needs improvements. We need cabinets and shelves for storage of daily food. We need to add more dishes, pots and pans and normal kitchen utensils. Will need another refrigerator as we expand. Large containers for bulk foods are another necessity.
Magdalena, who is the main contact with Unorcac, agreed to go on local radio to make an appeal for food such as rice, sugar, flour etc. I know that the Ecuadorian owned restaurants will want to participate once they know our needs.
We have an area that needs a simple roof along with tables and chairs for our elderly people. In this location they would not have to go down stairs. There are several bathrooms that need repairs and could be used to bathe the people in the future and offer a change of clothes.
Again, thank you for all your generosity in the past and we look forward to your support. All donations of time or money are deeply appreciated.
As Always
