March 10, 2017
This is Fund Raising month, so we can to continue caring for our poor and elderly people.
We serve breakfast to between 55 and 65 people from Monday thru Friday. We have added scrambled eggs with vegetables to our menu a couple times a week and it is popular. For some, this is the only meal of the day and we try to provide some carry out.
However our budget is limited. Donations are needed no matter how small. There is no such thing as a welfare system in this country. Our food bill is from $1,000 to $1,200 per month as the number of people we are able to serve fluctuates.
Our two volunteer doctors are doing a great job in checking our elderly. They offer just a few hours a month as they have their own medical practice. Many of our people have digestive problems, arthritis pain, vision, hearing and dental needs. Our volunteer doctors are working with digestive and arthritic pain with medications and natural products for healing.
Our goal is to find doctors to check vision, especially for cataracts, and hearing and dental problems. We will need funds to pay for some of these services, plus the cost of transportation to take our elderly people for these check-ups and follow through. People arriving from the States have brought the much-needed items for our medical cabinet, and we are very grateful. Donations are needed, no matter how small, to achieve our goals.
Hot showers are becoming more popular on Thursdays and sometimes we can offer a change of clothing. We do not have the staff to offer more showers during the week. If you are coming to Cotacachi from the States, it would be great if you would add some used clothing in your suitcase. Simple items like underwear (new), warm sweatshirts, sweaters, men and women’s long pants and shoes for men and women are always needed. If this is of interest to you, and you’d like to help, please send me an email.
Yes, we are having our first major fundraising on March 25th – a Pancake Breakfast with live music, free transportation and some raffle prizes! However, this will not cover our on- going costs and we ask for your continued support.
Ecuador Project Hope, in caring for our elderly, is in the second year of service. This is a grass roots project being done through your donations and the service of our volunteers.
Every donation goes to serve our poor and there are no Administrative fees. Every dollar counts toward our continuation of service.
Life for these people is not easy; many of the people we serve are the forgotten in society. The Place of Hope offers love and caring with attention to their physical needs. The gratitude we receive from them is overwhelming, and we are hugged and given blessings from them.
If you are in Cotacachi you are welcome to visit or volunteer. You will find it a beautiful and rewarding experience.
As Always,
Micky Enright
