Place of Hope Food Kitchen Update – October, 2016

September has been a busy month…

We have a local indigenous female doctor who will serve our people at the kitchen once a month. She came to the kitchen on Friday the 16th of September.   Many of our people recognized her and she speaks Kichwa – the language of many Indigenous elderly.   She checked five people and highly recommended vitamins and over the counter pain medicine. Our plan is to reach out to doctors in other areas of Ecuador to provide dental and eye care. Many of the elderly have cataracts or other eye problems.

Place of Hope

The elderly waiting in line to receive their multivitamin before having breakfast.

We are now giving each person a multiple vitamin with their breakfast each morning. I will be in the States for the month of October and will purchase vitamins, calcium, and over the counter pain medicine. (Vitamins are not the quality here as in the US and are more expensive).

Some of the women have been crocheting beautiful items – children’s dresses, doilies, scarves and a colorful throw with fringe for a bed. I am bringing what I can to Florida to sell. You can see photos of the items below. If you care to order an item, please email me at mickyenright@gmail.com.   All funds from sales will be given to the person who made the item. (I already have an order for a dress and headband for a two year old that I will be mailing from FL).

CrochetAlso, in Cotacachi we have a display table on Thursdays at Solid Rock Plaza to sell handmade items and good quality shoes and clothing that have been donated.  The funds for any handmade item that sells go directly to the person who made the item.

In November we plan to have a person work with the people for a garden on property behind the kitchen. This will be a hands-on project for organic gardening.

Each morning before we serve breakfast, the people dance and exercise with music. We now have an area for hand washing before eating breakfast.

Thank you for your ongoing help with donations to provide these services to our elderly. No matter how small of a donation, it helps in many ways. There are no administration fees.   Anyone visiting or living here locally is welcome to visit the food kitchen on Mondays through Fridays between 7:30am and 8:30am. If you have time to volunteer it would be appreciated.

Thank you,

As Always,
